India has announced a seven-day national mourning following the demise of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The declaration came on Thursday, December 26, through an official letter issued by G. Parthasarathy, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs. The mourning period will extend from December 26 to January 1, during which the national flag will remain at half-mast throughout the country, and no official entertainment programs will be held.
Indian media outlet Anandabazar reported on Friday, December 27, that Singh, known for his pivotal role in India’s economic liberalization, passed away after battling age-related ailments. According to the letter, Singh’s funeral has been scheduled for Saturday, December 28, with full state honors in New Delhi.
Singh, a prominent leader of the Indian National Congress, was born in present-day Pakistan and later became the first non-Hindu to hold the office of Prime Minister in India. Congress General Secretary (Organization) K.C. Venugopal stated that the public will have an opportunity to pay their respects, and further details regarding the funeral will be shared shortly.
According to the Press Trust of India (PTI), Singh collapsed at his residence on Thursday evening. He was rushed to the emergency department of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi around 8:00 PM after his condition worsened. Despite efforts by the medical team, Singh did not regain consciousness and was declared dead at 9:51 PM.
AIIMS released a statement confirming Singh’s death due to complications arising from age-related illnesses. The hospital noted that the former Prime Minister had faced several health challenges in recent years.
Manmohan Singh’s death marks the end of an era in Indian politics. Known for his intellect, integrity, and transformative contributions to the country’s economy, Singh served two consecutive terms as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. His tenure was marked by significant economic reforms, social welfare initiatives, and efforts to strengthen India’s position on the global stage.
The nation mourns the loss of a leader whose calm demeanor, dedication, and vision shaped India’s modern trajectory. The seven-day mourning period reflects the profound impact Singh had on the country and its people.
