India has emphasized the importance of democracy and "inclusive and participatory" elections to resolve all outstanding issues with Bangladesh. During a press conference in New Delhi on Friday (March 7), Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), reiterated India's commitment to a "stable, peaceful, inclusive, and progressive" Bangladesh.

Jaiswal stated that unresolved matters between the two nations should be addressed through democratic means, including free and fair elections. He expressed concern over Bangladesh's law and order situation, noting that the release of individuals convicted of serious crimes has further complicated the scenario.

Meanwhile, officials from the Joint Rivers Commission of Bangladesh and India recently held their 86th meeting in Kolkata to discuss the Ganges water-sharing treaty, which is set for renewal next year. The discussions focused on the benefits and challenges of the 30-year-old agreement, as well as technical aspects of water flow measurement and mutual interests.

On the issue of violence against minorities, particularly the Hindu community in Bangladesh, Jaiswal said India expects those responsible for killings, arson, and violence to be investigated and brought to justice.

Earlier, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had remarked that Bangladesh needs to decide what kind of relationship it wants with India. In response, Bangladesh's interim Foreign Affairs Adviser, Mohammad Tawhid Hossain, stated that India must also determine the nature of the relationship it seeks with Bangladesh.

Hossain emphasized that the relationship is a two-way matter, with both nations needing to make decisions about their future ties. He added, "There is nothing wrong in saying that Bangladesh will decide what kind of relationship it wants with India, and India must also decide what kind of relationship it wants with Bangladesh."

The discussions highlight the ongoing diplomatic efforts to address bilateral issues while underscoring the importance of democratic processes and mutual cooperation.
