On January 19, Israel released 90 Palestinian prisoners as part of a ceasefire agreement that marked the end of 15 months of bloodshed in Gaza. In a parallel gesture, Hamas released three Israeli hostages, initiating the prisoner exchange stipulated in the truce.

According to reports by Al Jazeera, the three Israeli hostages—Romi Gonen, Doron Stein Brecher, and Emily Damari—were freed through the Red Cross and subsequently transferred to Israel for advanced medical care.

In compliance with the agreement, Israel freed 90 Palestinian detainees, including women and children. The released individuals were sent to Khan Yunis Hospital for preliminary medical assessments. Israeli authorities confirmed that for every Israeli hostage released by Hamas, 30 Palestinian prisoners would be set free.

Reuters reported that most of the freed Palestinian detainees had been recently detained and had not been formally sentenced. Under the terms of the agreement, Hamas is expected to release 33 Israeli hostages in the first phase, with Israel releasing hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in exchange. The entire prisoner exchange process is anticipated to conclude within six weeks.

The truce also mandates the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza's densely populated areas, allowing displaced Palestinians to return to their homes. Additionally, aid convoys will be permitted daily entry into Gaza, addressing the urgent humanitarian needs of the region.

In the second phase of the agreement, Hamas will release the remaining Israeli hostages, and Israeli forces will complete their withdrawal from Gaza. The third phase involves the reconstruction of Gaza, a process expected to take several years. The agreement also includes provisions for returning the remains of deceased Israeli hostages to their families.
