Daniil Medvedev’s journey at the 2025 Australian Open turned out to be a nightmare. The Russian tennis star not only faced an early exit in the second round but was also fined over $92,000 for multiple instances of misconduct during the tournament.

Despite a hard-fought victory in the first round against Thailand’s Kasidit Samrej, where Medvedev emerged triumphant in a grueling five-set match, his frustration was evident. During the match, particularly after losing the second set and struggling in the third, Medvedev’s temper flared. In a moment of frustration, he struck a courtside camera with his racket five times near the net, causing significant damage to both the racket and the equipment. For this incident, he was fined $10,000.

On Thursday, in his second-round match against 19-year-old Learner Tien, Medvedev lost in an intense five-set battle with scores of 6-3, 7-6 (7/4), 6-7 (8/10), 1-6, and 7-6 (10/7). During the match, his temper again got the better of him. He threw his racket at an advertising board and engaged in a heated argument with the chair umpire. Following his defeat, Medvedev skipped the mandatory post-match press conference, which resulted in an additional penalty.

In total, Medvedev was fined $76,000 for his conduct throughout the tournament, equivalent to approximately 9.2 million Bangladeshi Taka.

Medvedev’s performance this year was a stark contrast to his previous campaigns at the Australian Open, where he had reached the finals three times. The early exit and repeated displays of poor sportsmanship have raised questions about his professionalism and temperament on the court.

Tennis fans and analysts have expressed mixed reactions to Medvedev’s behavior. While some have criticized his lack of composure, others believe this could serve as a lesson for the talented but temperamental player.

For Medvedev, the 2025 Australian Open is likely to be remembered not as a highlight of his career, but as a humbling and educational experience.
