US President Donald Trump has announced the imposition of new tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China, effective Tuesday. Starting next week, a 25% tariff will be applied to goods imported from Canada and Mexico, while a 10% tariff will be imposed on products coming from China.
However, the three major US trading partners are not taking Trump's decision lightly. Mexico, Canada, and China have all protested the move. Both Canada and Mexico have declared their intentions to impose retaliatory tariffs on American goods in response.
In response to the tariffs, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has directed her administration to implement "Plan B." In a statement on Saturday, Sheinbaum instructed her finance minister to prepare and execute "Plan B," which includes both tariff and non-tariff measures to protect Mexico's interests.
Mexico’s government rejected Trump’s allegations that the country is too lenient on drug cartels. Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico has no tolerance for drug traffickers. On social media platform X, Sheinbaum wrote, "We completely reject the White House's accusations against the Mexican government."
Sheinbaum also referenced the US's arms sales, claiming that if there is any relationship with criminal groups, it lies with US gun stores, which sell high-powered weapons to such groups.
The Mexican President further argued that if the US government truly wanted to address the fentanyl addiction crisis in their country, they would stop drug sales on the streets of their major cities, something they have not done.
Sheinbaum also highlighted the need for the US to fight money laundering, which fuels illegal activities and has devastating effects on its own citizens.
