Dhaka, November 18 – BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed disappointment over the Chief Advisor's speech marking 100 days of the interim government, criticizing the absence of a clear roadmap for elections. Fakhrul made these remarks on Monday during a discussion at the National Press Club, held to commemorate the 48th death anniversary of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani.
Speaking as the chief guest, Mirza Fakhrul said, “While many found hope in the Chief Advisor’s address, I am rather disheartened. I had expected him to use his wisdom to identify the pressing issues and present a detailed electoral roadmap. Swift elections are essential for the country’s well-being.”
Fakhrul urged the interim government to expedite reforms and ensure elections within a reasonable timeframe, warning against any perception of clinging to power. Drawing parallels with past regimes, he said, “During the Fakhruddin-Moinuddin era, they tried to hold onto power by forming a ‘King’s Party.’ The current government lacks both a mandate and the strength to sustain such attempts. Delays in elections will lead people to question your intentions, as they did with Fakhruddin-Moinuddin.”
Highlighting the BNP’s 31-point reform plan, Fakhrul stressed the importance of combating corruption to transform society. “Without eliminating bribery and corruption, societal change will remain elusive. While students aspire to transform everything, we know the extent to which change is possible,” he remarked.
Reiterating his call for elections, Fakhrul said, “An election will solve half the problems, regardless of whether BNP comes to power or not. Those trying to destabilize the country will be forced to step back, as an elected government has the backing of the people. We want reforms, but they must be effective, inclusive, and widely accepted.”
Paying tribute to Maulana Bhasani, Fakhrul described him as a towering figure of the nation. “Bhasani was our guiding tree. He rose from a humble background and dedicated his life to elevating people. His vision and leadership continue to inspire us,” he said.
