A powerful earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale struck Papua New Guinea on Friday, November 15, according to reports from Reuters. The Indonesian Geological Agency confirmed the quake's epicenter was located 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) below the surface. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported, and there is no risk of a tsunami.

This comes just four days after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit Cuba on Sunday, November 10. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the Cuban quake's epicenter was located 40 kilometers south of Bartolomé Masó. While no injuries were reported, the quake caused landslides, damaging homes and power lines, particularly in Santiago de Cuba and Granma regions.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, in a social media post, reassured citizens that there were no casualties. “The most important thing is that no lives were lost,” he emphasized.

Local residents in both nations described the quakes as unusually intense. Griselda Fernández, a resident of Santiago, told Reuters, “We’ve experienced earthquakes before, but nothing as strong as this.” The USGS noted that Cuba has experienced 23 earthquakes of magnitude 5 or higher in the past 50 years.

These recent seismic events have raised concerns about earthquake preparedness in the affected regions, as communities work to recover from the aftermath.
