Delhi is currently grappling with severe air pollution, which has led to the closure of all primary schools in the city. The air quality has reached a critical level for three consecutive days, prompting the authorities to take immediate action.
Starting from Friday, November 15, primary schools in Delhi will remain closed due to the hazardous pollution levels. However, education will continue online for students. Delhi’s Chief Minister, Atishi Marlena Singh, confirmed the decision in a post on the social media platform X, stating that classes would be conducted virtually until further notice due to the dense smog enveloping the city.
The pollution is not limited to Delhi alone but extends to neighboring areas such as Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon, and Faridabad. Visibility in these regions has drastically reduced, ranging from 500 to 800 meters, disrupting both road and air traffic. As a result, several restrictions have been imposed to curb the impact of the pollution.
A survey conducted on the pollution levels in the capital revealed alarming findings. It showed that in every 7 to 10 households, at least one person is suffering from the toxic pollution. Symptoms such as sore throat, coughing, burning eyes, and runny nose have become increasingly common. Experts have warned that the rising pollution is directly affecting the health of the public.
The pollution crisis in Delhi and other parts of northern India is primarily due to lower temperatures, smoke, dust particles, low wind speeds, vehicle emissions, and the burning of crop stubble. This combination of factors results in thick smog, which is a regular occurrence during the winter months.
