President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Linda McMahon, co-founder of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), as the United States Secretary of Education. McMahon, a former executive of WWE, built the wrestling empire alongside her husband, Vince McMahon. This marks another high-profile appointment for McMahon, who previously led the Small Business Administration during Trump’s first term.
McMahon's direct experience in education is limited. She served on Connecticut’s State Board of Education from 2009 to 2010 and was a trustee at Sacred Heart University, a private Catholic school, for 16 years. Despite this, Trump praised her leadership skills and understanding of education and business, saying she will "empower the next generation of American students and workers."
Focus on Universal School Choice
Trump emphasized McMahon's role in advancing the concept of "Universal School Choice," which aims to provide equal opportunities for families to select schools regardless of their income. He expressed confidence that McMahon would excel in promoting this vision across all states.
Trump has been a vocal critic of the federal Department of Education, even proposing its closure during his campaign. Speculation suggests that McMahon might initially be tasked with downsizing or dismantling the department as part of Trump’s broader education reform plans.
McMahon left WWE in 2009 to pursue a Senate bid and has since been a key donor and supporter of Trump. Since 2021, she has chaired the American Worker Center at Trump’s America First Policy Institute.
At the Republican Convention in Milwaukee, McMahon referred to Trump as "a colleague, a boss, and a friend," expressing her honor at being part of his administration.
McMahon’s nomination underscores Trump’s unconventional approach to selecting leaders, favoring business experience and loyalty over traditional qualifications for government roles.
