In response to credible intelligence suggesting the possibility of Russian airstrikes, the United States has temporarily closed its embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine, on November 20. The U.S. embassy issued a warning advising American citizens in Ukraine to remain prepared to seek shelter in case of an attack.
Following the U.S. warning, both Italy and Greece also closed their embassies in Kyiv, while France has kept its embassy open but urged its citizens to stay vigilant.
The embassy closure came after Ukraine launched a missile strike deep into Russian territory using U.S.-supplied ATACMS missiles. This marked the 1,000th day of the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia. The strike was carried out under a new approval from the outgoing U.S. administration, which authorized Ukraine to use the missiles on Russian soil.
Russia had previously warned that any strike using American weapons would be considered a direct attack by the U.S. and threatened a nuclear response.
Amid these rising tensions, the U.S. embassy in Kyiv confirmed that it had received specific information regarding the threat of an airstrike, prompting the closure. A statement on the embassy's website emphasized that the closure was a precautionary measure to avoid potential risks, and embassy staff have been directed to take shelter in secure locations.
The U.S. State Department further recommended that American citizens in Ukraine prepare to take shelter immediately upon receiving an airstrike warning.
